Also known as retargeting, remarketing is a tactic that lets you show ads to people who have visited your website before. When a person leaves your site without buying something, that person can be reminded later through relevant ads as they browse elsewhere around the internet. Retargeting can be incredibly successful and can dramatically increase your ROI.
As a seller, you may not be very familiar with this advertising method, but as a buyer, you have most likely been the target of it. For example, if you go to Amazon’s web site, and you look at a coffee maker, but you leave the site without completing the purchase, Amazon will remind you later in the day to come back and buy it. You might be scrolling through Facebook when you see an ad for that specific coffee maker, including the price as well as a convenient link back to Amazon to finalize your purchase.
How does Retargeting Work?
Retargeting begins by placing a JavaScript tag on your website. Every time people visit your site, this small piece of code places anonymous retargeting “cookies” in their browser. A list is automatically generated of people that have been to your site. This list of people is also called an “audience.” Now that your visitors have been “cookied,” their online behavior will be tracked so your ads show up to the most relevant audience.
These tags, or codes, can be placed on certain pages or throughout your entire site which means there is flexibility in the size of your potential audience. The size of your audience greatly affects the success of your campaign. The larger your audience, the better. Whether you decide to start off with a smaller group – for example, only people with an abandoned shopping cart – or you track everyone who visits your website, this marketing method is highly effective. Couple this with the search terms – found through SEO – used to land on your site and you’ll have a whole new level of insight to your potential buyer.

Remarketing vs. Retargeting
There has been some confusion in the last few years regarding the difference between these two terms. Essentially, they are the same. Remarketing, however, is a term coined by Google Adwords for websites that are part of the Google Display Network, or for people searching for your products or services on Google. Retargeting is the ideology behind remarketing.
